Having put his name up on a sign offerring for a tournament battle at a specific time and place, and seeing that someone had accepted his challenge by filling out the opposite slot, Luke found himself at a rather typical Natrelmon arena: square, twenty-by-twenty feet, loose dirt with occasional patches of grass around. In front of him stood a rather eager Nakumo, pointed feet sticking slightly into the dirt to meet a hard underground area.

Luke had arrived somewhat early, and was attaining some sort of focus... his eyes were half-closed, at the moment, simply trying to block everything out but the oncoming battle, the sun hanging high overhead, a small glint coming from the stud of one of his gloves... he had practiced his feeble wall a week earlier, and had gotten the hang of placement.

All that remained now, was to battle this 'Isaac'.

All that remained now, was to battle this 'Luke'.

"Oh, wow! That thing is huge!"

Isaac, just walking in from a door on the opposite side of the arena, immediately dropped to the floor in a cross-legged sitting position. He pulled a smooth wooden suitcase onto his lap and flicked open the dull brass clasps. With a moment of rustling he retrieved a specifically numbered pencil, large eraser, desktop and large sheet of paper. He then slid the briefcase to the side.

"Hold that pose! Man, I can't believe how ginormous that thing is! What's it called, anyway?"

By this point the opposing trainer was intent on the paper, glancing up feverishly every half-moment to double-check a detail before returning to the sketch. Flattering or off-putting, Luke might have trouble tuning that out, especially if he wanted to start the battle immediately...

Luke sighed, his right hand pinching his sinus in slight frustration. "Its called a Nakumo, and it will get bigger..." Luke said, looking again down at the two-foot-tall steel spider, only big for comparison to other spiders.

Nakumo held its ground, the steel glinting somewhat as it reached and held its metalmorphasis control of its exoskeleton.

"At any rate, we're here to battle; I'll pose some other time. Please, go first."

Isaac paused in mid-pencil stroke. He sighed. "As you wish," he said sadly, and reached into a pocket, drawing out a large card. "Come on out, Petal!" The sadness vanished from his voice as he was calling the Natrelmon, now much more warm and encouraging.

The card flickered but otherwise didn't respond.

He grinned glassily up at Luke for a moment. "Come on out, Petal," he repeated. The card shivered, but there was still no pink flower appearing. Isaac scowled, but relented in a moment.

"Are you afraid?" he asked softly. No response from the card, but there was the sense something was paying attention, like a sleeping dog perking up an ear.

"Look, I'll make sure nothing bad happens... it's just another Natrelmon, like you. Sure, it's a little scary, but if you're going to get bigger you have to fight bigger things..." His voice was soothing, reassuring, as of a mother speaking to a child.

"You'll be fine. He's the one that should be scared. Look at you! You've grown so much since that day we met. You held your own against a dragon! What can that spider do to you that the dragon couldn't?"

The relic shimmered, and a small pink form hesitantly emerged to on the ground.

"There, there, you see? It's not so bad. Now, go make me proud! Go get him, Petal!"

Petal seemed to cheer up and get its confidence. She took to the field, scattering seeds left and right, happily making her way toward the spider. It would take quite a while to actually reach the spider, however, given the distance proportionate to the flower and the Sakura's current leisurely pace.

With Nakumo starting a rather large ten feet away from the spider, Luke gave his simple order, realising that the longer sow went on, the harder this battle was going to be to win: "Prepare defensive metalmorph; rush head on!"

The spider quickly followed suit after giving an affirming click of its fangs: using its eight legs, the Nakumo, which had slightly dug into the ground as eluded to before, leaned back slightly and literally pulled himself forward to get through a decent part of its slow accelleration time, picking up speed while approaching the Sakura. Like a baterring ram, small, half-inch-yet-sharp spikes appeared at the spider's front side in a literal attempt to skewer petal and end this quickly. It seemed to maintain the speed it obtained from the first pull, instead of choosing to speed up... however, the pace was far from 'leisurely'.

Sakura let out a scream, running away at a faster speed than Nakumo was approaching. She was tentative enough about the battle, but all the spikes and the over dramatic approach had completely unnerved her.

"Petal, no! You can do it! Offensive whirlwind!"

Isaac may have made his command up on the spur of the moment, since it seemed to completely springboard off of Luke's, but Petal seemed to understand. Now with enough room to maneuver, she flapped her petals and such and formed a twister around herself, grass and dust getting caught up in it and completely hiding the Sakura. The whirlwind then moved toward the large metal spider.

Isaac, for his part, focused intently on the battle, pen held halfway above the paper. This battle seemed hopeless, but then again, so did any other battle Petal was in. She needed these wins if she was going to get stronger. He wasn't going to mess it up for her by being distracted hey, look at that man up in the audience! Is that a wig? It can't be real no, pay attention!

"Steel net! Repeat fire until it gets through!"

The order for Nakumo came directly after Isaac gave his order to use the whirlwind, which, in retrospect, was probably the best move that could be used to counter in this situation. For one, with Nakumo moving forward and Sakura moving towards the Nakumo within the whirlwind, Luke looking with careful eyes to make sure that the Sakura wasn't appearing outside of the whirlwind, a comprehensive and heavy attack through the entire construct would seem the most effective.

Nakumo understood, and, with a click of its pincers, launched from its mouth a steel net, large enough in diameter to be wider than the whirlwind, launched carefully so that it would not drag on the ground, which meant that the net was fired slightly upward. With Nakumo's forward momentum and the drawing power of the whilwind adding to the speed of the net, however, the net's trajectory was quickly corrected and made extremely fast when compared to a steel net fired stationary. The holes of the net were small enough so that, if the Sakura tried to squeeze through, it would instead be stuck, and the attack was wide enough to hit through the entire whirlwind. Due to its weight and especially due to its velocity, the disruptive effect of the whirlwind would be negligable.

If the net stopped by a feeble wall (which would break due to the attack), the Nakumo would immediately fire again, hence lessenning the effect of blocking it by instinct.

PostSubject: Re: Tournament Battle 3: Luke vs. Isaac   Tournament Battle 3: Luke vs. Isaac I_icon_minitimeThu Apr 22, 2010 7:14 pm

Isaac laughed aloud, with a resounding 'Aha!'

The net did, in fact, meet a feeble wall, which did shatter, just as Luke had predicted. What he had assumed, incorrectly, was that the wall would then fall to the ground, no longer relevant, and the Nakumo would be free to launch an additional net before the Sakura reached it. This would prove the Achilles Heel, as it were, of the strategy.

The net hit the feeble wall, its forward momentum killed. When it did so, however, the force of the whirlwind was beginning to act on it. Now, without that forward momentum so crucial to the net's smashing through the entire attack, the force of the whirlwind and gravity were the only things acting on it. The whirlwind took the net in its wind, spun it in a rotation, and hurled it back toward the spider as the net gained enough momentum to break free.

At this moment, however, it met the second net en route to the whirlwind, the two hitting one another and falling to the ground, sliding more toward the whirlwind as the two were attracted slightly by the pull. They were too far away at this point and too heavy combined to be effectively pulled and thrown, however.

The whirlwind rose over the nets, swirling menacingly with all the sand and grass taken in it, now. The Nakumo wouldn't have enough time, at this point, to launch a further net, especially given all its forward momentum. It would be hard-pressed to try and swerve to either side to avoid the whirlwind, also due to its momentum and the time given.

Isaac cheered enthusiastically, still watching the battle closely in case a further feeble wall could be used. It wasn't likely he could react in time at this point, but he was an optimist at heart and still wanted to be ready.

"Come on, Petal! Show him who's boss!"

PostSubject: Re: Tournament Battle 3: Luke vs. Isaac   Tournament Battle 3: Luke vs. Isaac I_icon_minitimeThu Apr 22, 2010 7:32 pm

It seemed that the battle would be over soon.

Indeed, Nakumo fired a steel net in the short gap while still running forward, when it saw that the net had fallen. With the same velocity argument as before, the instant the net was dropped and the next net was fired, the second net had a higher speed than the first, while the first net was being drawn in the whirlwind to be turned around and launched back.

Within the whirlwind, naturally, the stopped net began to ball up slightly, still somewhat loose (If it had stayed at full radius, it would have hit its own tail, and hence had the Sakura caught up in it anyway). However, it speed was still slower when compared to the second net, which was still increasing in speed due to the whirlwind's draw.

Hence, at the instant that the net would have left the vortex, slightly compacted, the second attack was already at the whirlwind, the impromptu ball striking the center of the net, instantly causing the second net to close around the whirlwind in such a manner that anything inside would very quickly be caught in a bag; since Sakura was making an effort to go forward and was probably blinded by the current contents of the whirlwind (especially the general confusion of the first net), it probably would not know that it was trapped in the confines of a net until far too late. Also, due to the concealing methods of the whirlwind, Isaac would not know where the first net was, entirely, and would likely not be able to make a block whatsoever.

If this failed for some reason, Nakumo would fire a third net while jumping into the whirlwind, to attack everything in the whirlwind at once while using his own body to speed it up, the same size net as before.

In order for the net to circle around the whirlwind and hurl back at the Nakumo, it would need to release at a very specific point. It wouldn't move in between the Sakura and spider and launch outward; no, it would have to begin to break free of the whirlwind more toward the side, moving toward the spider more from that side than from the center of the whirlwind.

Thus, the balled-up net hit the wide one more from the side as well. The wide net closed over it to some extent, but folded up more with the altered angle of impact, crumpling up into a big mess of steel wires. They did skim the outer edge of the whirlwind, but that only succeeded in making a small irregularity in the spread of the sand and grass in it.

As Nakumo leaped toward the whirlwind, it tried to make a net. Given the fact that both were speeding toward one another and given the small distance between them, it didn't have enough time to complete the net. It made the same size net as before, however. This meant that, while maintaining size, it was much less well-made. The spaces in the mesh were much greater, enough to allow a Sakura easy passage through. The purpose the net served now was probably to increase the spider's mass to increase the chance of crushing the flower if it did trap it.

Suddenly, however, a pink form flew off to the right as Nakumo fell down on the whirlwind, out of easy attacking range. From there, as the spider was falling, she could move in for a risky all-or-nothing attack. She could strike up another whirlwind, or try to do something to trap it in its own nets. What she did, however, was run away.

"Petal, what are you doing?" shouted Isaac. "This is not what we planned! You're embarrassing me in front of everyone!"

Petal ignored Isaac's cries, running as fast as she could to escape while the spider fell on the whirlwind. Her heart had been pounding while she was in the whirlwind, and she'd lost her nerve at the last second for that attack. How could she take on something like that spider? It was huge!

Unknown to Petal, Nakumo would be in worse shape than expected. It had dropped its face and body into a swirling whirlwind of razor-sharp grass, sand and seeds. The debris and winds would do some light damage to the Nakumo's body, enough to scratch it and maybe cause a slightly twinge, although nothing too serious given its steel body. Its face was in worse shape. The sand and razor blade grass would cut into the eyes and other unprotected parts, blinding it and causing pain. Its relic might pulse slightly at the damage, though it wasn't nearly enough to cause it to glow.

"Sakura! Petal! Petal! Stop running! Watch the spider!"

Isaac had his walls ready to defend Sakura while it got some distance...

"I think your Sakura is telling you she's ready to quit," Luke observed, Nakumo shaking itself off from jumping on nothing. Since the net carried through the whirlwind, the effect of anything in the air was severely lessenned as the whirlwind was severely weakened, and there was little in the air to iritate the Nakumo. It turned towards the Sakura, gave a menacing click, and began approaching once more, with less of a real speed and more of an intimidation factor. On a snap from Luke, it then broke out into its run, Luke not wanting it to use sow at this point of the game.

Sakura would find that the second net did more than expected, since the net was travelling faster than her through the whirlwind due to initial velocity. In fact, her entire side had been dug into by the bare edges of the steel net, like the ends of chain-link fencing where the diamonds become sharp 'V's. Because of this, Petal actually had sizeable cuts on the right side of her body, quite deep for a creature of that size... it would currently be dripping blood to the ground, Isaac's relic gaining an increasing glow. The damage done by the bleeding would be heavily outweighing the current sow in play.

"I suggest you make a decision. Are you going to force her to fight this injured, or are you going to call your 'Petal' back?"

Luke was perhaps a little overconfident in saying this... but Petal, though capable of fighting, had to be really hurt at this point. If the battle prolonged, it would be bad, and Luke still had feeble walls to block the sow...

Isaac bit his lip, glancing at Petal. She needed to get stronger, and he wanted to win this, but if it meant the little flower had to be hurt... He wanted to win this, but at what cost? Now he wouldn't be able to see those tournament Natrelmon up close and sketch them, he wouldn't get to meet the trainers, Petal wouldn't get the strength she needed to fight wild Natrelmon or gym leaders...

"Petal... Come back..."

He raised the relic toward the flower, who... resisted. Petal kept running, breathing heavily, outdistancing the heavy metal spider, throwing seeds left and right. Any webs thrown were dodged, and she was too swift for the Nakumo to execute a tackle. Isaac gritted his teeth.

"What do you think you're doing?! I'm trying to do what's best for you, so just come back!"

Petal shook her head and kept running. She let out a bunch of dissenting, high-pitched noises.

Ivan's face went expressionless for a moment, before he smiled, wiping a tear from his eye.

"You want to keep fighting... so we can... so I..." Ivan shook his head. "But you're too injured. Look at all that blood you're... you're... where did all the blood go? Petal!"

With every step, Petal had also planted a few more seeds, which had started to take root immediately... The fastest of them had already begun to send in energy. The wounds first closed over, stopping the blood flow, and then the damage from blood loss healed... The glow of his relic faded away more and more quickly as more seeds began sending in energy.

"You can do it, Petal! You can win this!"

"... Metal Zone."

It was barely the instant that Sakura began running blindly away to heal, that Luke initiated his next strategy. Instead of aiming at Sakura, Luke rather aimed a net quickly at Sakura's left; then, a moment later, to the right, each five feet in diameter; a single wire from each net remained connected to Nakumo's steel fangs. With a click, he activated metalmorphasis, doing minor steel manipulation to flatten the nets out to their maximum covering area. With the current, undefined direction of Sakura's running away, Sakura was now trapped in a one-and-a-half foot by one-and-a-half foot area, locked against the corner of the arena, walls on either side of it, the nets overlapping at a small section in front of Nakumo and streching up to and bunched up slightly against the wall. If Sakura tried to move over these nets, the effect would be disasterous.

"Till the seeds."

Understanding, Nakumo focused its still manipulation to the net, sliding a few cross-sections of netting left-and-right, which cut the vital part of the surface seeds, killing the plant underneath as the roots became disconnected from the seed.

Not needing further orders beyond this point, Nakumo began to walk forward to the Sakura, keeping connected to the nets via the wires, moving ever-closer to the still-bleeding Petal...

"Sap!"

Petal flapped its petals wildly, making a whirlwind around itself. It was more of a self-defense mechanism at this point than an attack. From it, however, seeds began to hurl out, landing near, far, and wide as well. Isaac watched the field closely, eyes narrowed.

"Come on, Petal, let's finish this up... This is our last shot..."

It seemed Isaac did have some sort of last-ditch strategy he'd saved for this occasion... although if it didn't work the battle would likely be over.

"Finish it, Nakumo."

There was little need to say anything else: Nakumo had one web left, and had been preparing it for this last attack. Keeping in contact with the other nets via the steel line, Nakumo charged forward to the small area where the Sakura would have little or no time to charge. It hopped ever so slightly upward in an attempt to crash forward at the Sakura's location, where it would have no room left to dodge an attack without running into the net area, as Nakumo's body would encompass the entire small area. Right before this jump, it fired its last net, aimed dead-center at the Sakura, as it would have virtually no way to physically dodge this net, made much like the first two that were used.

This was literally Sakura's last feasible chance to do anything...

"Now!" Isaac cried.

As the web launched forward, it met a feeble wall, barely in Isaac's field of power relating to Sakura. It halted in the air and, Nakumo coming forward, ran right into it. The sharp, serrated edges that had cut so deeply into Sakura's sides were now acting on Nakumo's face and eyes. The momentum-less heavy metal net now killed a lot of the spider's momentum, giving Petal enough time to make her move...

Meanwhile, a pink form flew from the top of the whirlwind with the seeds, easily passing over the head of the Nakumo and the net. It was somewhat heavier than a seed, though, and didn't travel nearly as far. It landed on the Nakumo's back as the spider passed underneath, the spider unable to evade as it was currently off the ground in its leap. Clinging to the spider's back as Nakumo would be touching down to the ground, Petal's entire body began to burn a bright lime green, and Nakumo would begin to feel... drained.

In more of a reflex than anything else, when feeling the pain in one direction, Nakumo quickly and likely painfully sent several spikes directly towards the Sakura's torso which was against the Nakumo as it began its sap. It would be out of sight, the head unable to see this attack.

Fortunately, it was restrained enough so that Sakura would faint, but not immediately die, though Isaac's relic would be profusely glowing at this moment, as there would be virtually no time, or even if there was time, no way (as in ability to sense) for the Sakura to dodge these spikes in time.

Isaac recalled Petal to the relic. This time, there was no resistance. He looked down at the ground, eyes cast into shadow. "That..." he said quietly. "That... that was..." He threw his head up, looking directly into Luke's eyes. "Awesome!"

Isaac rushed across the field to Luke, balancing his materials precariously on the desktop. "I never expected Sakura to do so well! And your spider was so strong, I was even intimidated from all the way over there! Good fight, good fight. Here, take the tourney money. You've earned it!"

Here, he thrust a small pouch into Luke's hands, inside which was the 2,000 N. "This was only my second battle, but I think I did rather well, don't you? Still, I'll need to get a whole lot better if I'm going to win anything soon. Say, could you teach me how to battle more effectively? I'm afraid little Petal here will never get stronger if I'm left to myself, hah!"

His enthusiasm was rather overwhelming, and there wasn't even a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
